Caldwell Architects is proud to celebrate its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of thoughtful design, lasting partnerships, and a deep commitment to the communities it serves.
Beginning in 1986, Miller and three employees opened the doors working at their drafting boards with paper and pencil, electric(!) erasers, and studio drafting stools. The marketing department was the rotary phone sitting at the edge of the table.
A client would call and task them with solving complex operational problems with a modest interior renovation. A health care client and would call about getting fresh ideas about how to grow their campus. A friend would call with a dream about converting a long-neglected waterfront property into a thriving baseball stadium and community park. Or a federal client would ask them to step in to help a massively over budget project move forward through strategic rethinking about how to design it.
From the beginning, the firm’s mission has remained clear: to strengthen communities through meaningful design. Caldwell’s work is grounded in the belief that architecture is not just about buildings, but about the people who use them and the environments they shape.
Fast forward 40 years and although the desks, pencils, and phones have changed, Caldwell Architects is working in the same way to use design to help their clients and improve communities. What began as a small practice has evolved into a dynamic, multi-disciplinary firm with offices in Tuscaloosa, Demopolis, Birmingham, and Charleston, SC Their collaborative approach to design has earned them clients across the Southeast in the healthcare, education, commercial, collegiate athletics, and civic sectors.
Reflecting on the firm’s founding vision, Miller Caldwell Jr. said, “We started this firm with a simple idea—that good design should serve people first. If we’ve done our job well, our work has made a meaningful difference in the everyday lives of the communities we’re part of.”
Now in its second generation with Miller III at the helm, Caldwell Architects represents a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and community impact. That legacy has shaped not only the firm’s culture, but also its long-standing relationships with clients—many of which span decades.
“Our story has always been connected to the communities we serve,” said Miller Caldwell, III, “We’ve been fortunate to grow alongside our clients, helping bring their visions to life while creating spaces that make a lasting impact.”
As the firm celebrates this milestone, it remains focused on the future, continuing to evolve, adapt, and lead with the same passion that has defined its first 40 years.
“While we’re proud of where we’ve been, we’re even more excited about what’s ahead,” Miller III added. “The best work is still to come.”
